I know I cant be blamed for it. I was young and naïve. “Here Danny this is how you play! You prick your finger like this, and then you write your name with the blood, fold it up, make your wish, and burn it in the candle. ” Came 10-year-old Marks voice. I watched as he held the paper out over the candle that sat centered in the middle of our sloppily drawn pentagram. “Here you try. ” He handed me a small piece of ripped paper. I never considered what the consequences could be. “What did you wish for Mark? ” I asked trying to figure something out. “If I tell you it wont come true. ” I shouldve known that. Thats how birthday wishes work to. After some careful consideration I decided to wish that Zack would get hurt super badly. Zack was my school bully and I hated him. I pricked my finger with the needle and wrote my name with the small amount of blood. I held it over the candle and only released it when the flame began to burn my finger. A few weeks later Zack was in a horrible car accident. Both his parents and sister were killed, and he was left in a wheelchair. I had wanted Zack to get hurt, but not like this. His family didnt deserve any of that. I was traumatized by the incident, but I never told anyone that it was my wish. I Asked Mark if his wish came true and he got mad at me and stopped talking to me. In my head that confirmed it. I decided I would never mess with this stuff again. Years later, during college I met Jackie. She was curt, matter of fact, blunt. She dressed in loose jeans and dirty flannels, giving the image that she didnt care about her appearance. I really didnt care for her as a person, bit was forced to work with her on a project regarding the intricacies of modern art. I was only taking an art class an elective because I enjoyed drawing, but my major was Computer Science. She was okay to work with and did her part well enough. I managed to graduate with an associates degree and got a decent job working for a large semi-conductor company. “Happy one-year anniversary Danny. Make sure to check the company website and make your 10 hours of vacation are added. ” My bosss voice conveyed no congratulatory tone. He handed me a cupcake with a “one” shaped candle and walked away from desk. I finished work for the day and decided to stop for some coffee on my way home. I wanted to get the deck re-painted before the sun went down and needed an extra kick after a long day. I was waiting for my Coffee when I heard my name. “Danny? Is that you Danny? ” Came a female voice. I turned and found myself looking at a rather pretty girl about my age. She seemed familiar but I couldnt a figure it out. “Yes, do I know you? ” I asked with no small amount of suspicion. She laughed in a manner I found rather cute. “Yes, you do. ” She stated flatly, waiting for me to recognize her. After a moment she sighed. “Its Jackie. Im Jackie from college. Remember the super boring art project? ” She inquired. I was stunned, and apparently my face showed it. “Pick your jaw up, you look like an idiot, ” she teased with a laugh. We both got our coffee and sat at a table to catch up. When we decided to leave, I worked up some courage and asked her for her number. “Oh, I get it, now youre into me, but in college I wasnt good enough for you? ” She teased with a gleam in her eye. I shrugged apologetically and decided to play her game right back. “To be fair, in college you dressed like a bum. Acted like it to if I remember correctly, ” I fired back with a smirk. I was sifting through my memories, trying to remember if she had ever showed any interest in me. She sat up in her chair for a moment with a look of surprise, and then settled back down, resting her chin on her fist. “Touché, ” she conceited. A small smile appeared on her lips. “Hand me your phone. I think that I would like to see you again after all. ” I couldnt help but feel a little flattered. Again, I wore my emotions on my sleeve, and she saw right through me. “Your blushing, ” She stated. I could feel my cheeks get a bit hotter. She giggled that cute giggle again, and with that we said our goodbyes and headed our separate ways. We continued dating for some time. Things were going incredibly well. We spent many evenings out together, frequenting bars and clubs, or sitting at home, watching movies and shows with just each other as company. We decided she would move into my apartment, as it was larger and closer to her work. To commemorate the occasion, we got a kitten. Despite Jackies tomboyish nature, she insisted that we name it Mittens. I avoided using the name at every possible chance, preferring just to call it cat. I could feel second hand embarrassment every time she would say its name in her baby voice. It was a few months later that the big news came. Jackie was pregnant. I was overjoyed. I was scared. I was happy. I was sad. Emotions flowed through me like a river, but they eventually stabilized, and I felt nothing but excitement. While the pregnancy was not planned, we were financially okay, and I was planning to propose anyway. I had a dream that night. A lone candle burns in a dark room. The flame grows larger and begins to stutter. From the flames a piece of torn paper emerges. The paper floats wistfully into the air, unfolding. Written on blood on the paper is the word “Danny. ” A white flash. A car is driving through a four way stop light. They have the green. They start driving and are immediately struck in the side by a large SUV that ran a red. Two dead adults in the front. A dead young girl in the back. Zack, unconscious and bleeding in the back, legs crushed. An unfamiliar young boy stands next to the ruined car, staring at me, his hands coated in blood. I woke to up a loud booming in the hallway. I looked to the door as the pounding approached. “Rooaar, I am wifezilla! ” Jackies voice rang out as she entered the room dressed in sweats with her hair frizzy and unkempt. I smiled as I looked at her, my dark dream fading into the back of my mind as the woman I loved filled me with light. I decided this was the moment. “Well, actually you arent Wifezilla, ” I said to her as I casually reached under the bed and grabbed the ring from out of her line of sight. I could almost feel her gaze piercing the back of my head. “However, ” I continued as I dropped to one knee in-front of her, “I would like you to be. Jackie, you have made me the happiest man alive, and know that sounds cliché but I dont know how else to word it. I cant wait any longer. Will you marry me? ” I opened the black velvet box, revealing a sparkling diamond ring. She fell to her knees with me and gave me a resounding, tear filled “Yes. ” The baby was born nine months later, healthy as could be. Soon after we were happily married. We bought a new house together, a nice place to start our family together. The cat had a hard time adapting and kept peeing in random places, but after a few months started to use the litter box again. During that time, we shared many secrets and shames, and she became the first one I ever told of how I had wished for Zack to be hurt. She had hugged me and said there was no way it could be my fault, and our life together moved on. “Vroom here comes the airplane, ”I said playfully as I tried to get Ethan to eat his food. He smiled happily until the food entered his mouth. His face scrunched and he began crying loudly. I figured I wouldnt like mashed carrot either. After picking him up and calming him down I decided to try one more time. I placed the baby food on the table beside me and tried to feed him. He screamed again, and I heard glass shatter. I looked down and saw the baby food on the ground, shattered glass and orange mush flung all over the floor. I mustve bumped the table? It was the only explanation. He was just old enough now that he started to sleep in the crib. He showed incredible dexterity and was able to climb out the crib if we didnt raise the gate correctly. He did not like the crib. He cried every night unless he fell asleep with us. We let him lay with us until he was asleep, and then would carefully transfer him to his crib. In the middle of the night I woke to my door creaking open. I strained my eyes in the dark, trying to see what opened it, but it was useless. Quick as a dart I turned on my bedside lamp only to find Ethan in the doorway. My heartbeat began to normalize when I realized there was no danger. Upon returning him to his crib I noticed that somehow, the gate had been lowered. By the time Ethan was two years old he was finally sleeping in his own bed. On this particular night we had decided to stay up late to watch a movie together. Ethan snuggled with Jackie, and we watched Pixars newest movie as a family. Ethan pointed to the floor at his sippy cup and looked back up at Jackie. She set him down to go get it when he accidentally stepped on the cats tail. Mittens back arched, and with a loud hiss she scratched Ethans arm before darting off into another room. Ethan cried loudly, a small amount of blood seeping through the shallow wound. After some comforting and a bandage, we were able to calm him and send him to sleep. In the middle of the night we were woken by a loud, violent yowl. There was a crash, another loud yowl, and then nothing. Jackie and I both jumped out of bed and ran to see what was happening. In the kitchen we found Ethan sitting, drinking happily from his sippy cup. Not four feet from him was Mittens. I heard Jackie stifle a gasp. Mittens neck was turned at an impossible angle, clearly broken. A small amount of blood dripped from her mouth. We looked for intruders but found no sign of forced entry. We never had an explanation. I suspected Ethan, but Jackie wouldnt hear of it. Ethan was seven now. He was in the middle of second grade. He had been doing well in school and was learning to write. We received a call from his teacher, Mrs. Connie. We were told he written a rather inappropriate story and were asked for a parent teacher conference. When we arrived, we were told that Ethans behavior had begun to degrade. He was starting to lose friends because he was being mean to them. We told the teacher that at home Ethan acted as normal as ever. She handed us his sloppily written story: I have a cat. Her name is Mittens. Mittens is nice to me. Mittens is soft. One day Mittens was mean to me, so I gave myself to the other me, and he made Mittens go away. The story sent shivers down my spine and all but confirmed what I had already suspected. Jackie only scoffed at the idea of her angel doing something so brutal. Besides it wouldnt even be physically possible, given his age at the time, right? We thanked Mrs. Connie for her time and headed home. Once home, we sat Ethan down to have a talk about his story. “Ethan, ” I started, “Did you write this story? ” I handed the paper to him. He looked it over and nodded up at me, with his big child eyes gleaming with life and energy. “Did Mrs. Connie show you my story? ” He asked. I nodded to him. “I told her not to. She wasnt supposed to. Now I want Mrs. Connie to go away. ” He crossed his arms and pouted. “Thats no way to talk about a teacher. Mrs. Connie is only there to help you. Ethan, who is the other you? ” I wanted answers fast. My child was possibly suffering from mental illness and I wanted to put an end to it as soon as possible. Ethans demeanor seemed to change with the subject, his eye glazing over, losing that childish look and adopting the gaze of someone who had lived a millennia. “There is no other me. Its only a story. ” The voice sounded like his, but the rhythm was different, almost old. “Ethan, I need you to be honest with me. ” I refused to relent. “There is no other me! ” Ethan shouted with surprising authority. Ethan eyes suddenly conveyed murderous intent. Ice cold dread shot through my body. He got down from the couch and walked to his room, slamming the door behind him. I looked at Jackie, “What the hell was that? ” She shrugged, visibly shaken by the ordeal. Ethan didnt come down for the rest of the night. Jackie received a call from the school the next morning. Connie had been found dead in her classroom. She hung herself from the ceiling, found by one of the kids that would come in early for extra help. Jackie told me she tried to have a sit down with Ethan about suicide, but he would only sit silent. Right in the middle of their conversation he just got up and walked into his room, shutting the door behind himself. It went on like this for weeks. Ethan wanted nothing to do with us. He would still go to school, eat and do everything required of him, but without a word. Tonight, I was up to get a late-night snack in the middle of the night. I walked past Ethans room and heard something. I put my ear to the door. Whispering? “Make them go away. Make them both go away. No, its wrong. They are nice to us. No! They make us do things we dont want to do. They get us in trouble. Let me make them go away. Just like Mrs. Just like Mittens. ” I lost my balance and stumbled, making a small thump on the floor. The whispering stopped. Ethans door slowly cracked open. I was terrified. From the barely cracked door I could see one of Ethans eyes staring intently at me, wrapped in empty darkness. “Hey bud, Im just on my way to get a snack, would you like something? ” My voice was a little shaky. Ethan stared with his single visible eye for a moment more before ever so slowly shutting his door. I shivered as goosebumps coated my body, my appetite suddenly gone. I returned to my room and appraised Jackie of what I heard. She sat up in bed and listened as I told her my suspicions of mental illness. Jackie only nodded, finally relenting to me that she did not want to believe that our child might be a sociopath. As I talked to her about options I watched as her face suddenly drained of blood, her eyes focusing behind me. I turned to find Ethan standing in the doorway. When had he opened the door? He stepped into the room, impossibly making no noise at all. The door shut behind him, affected by an unseen force. “There will be no mental help. ” He stated flatly. “I am not a sociopath. ” He looked at Jackie. “Ethan did not kill Mittens, I did. ” He looked to me. “And I also killed Mrs. ” It was startling to hear such words, and such confidence conveyed in the voice of a little boy. He stared with dead eyes from Jackie, and back to me. The door opened behind him, and he walked silently back to his room, again shutting the door behind him. Jackie and I were frozen in mute shock, both horrified by what our child was doing. We stayed up the rest of the night, discussing new options. We opted for church. We wouldnt tell him, we would simply show up. But the next day Ethan was back to normal. He was talkative and seemed to have no recollection of what had happened. He attended church with us happily, and even joined in the singing sessions. During this time of peace, I decided to start some research into the occult. Possession, curses, and even voodoo. The local library had a surprising amount of literature pertaining to all things supernatural. For the first week or so I read a lot of interesting things and more often than not found myself reading simply because it was fascinating. I was will flipping through a particularly old leather volume, aptly named Ritualia, when I saw an illustration that made my breath catch in my throat. It was a simple drawing. A single candle, in the middle of a pentagram, a piece of paper burning in the flame. Memories of my childhood flooded through my vision. The guilt of Zacks dead parents, and his paralysis. I gulped, and read the passage beneath the illustration: The Ritual of Desire: Simply draw a pentagram, place a lit candle in the middle, and burn parchment with your name written in blood. Then you may state your desire. Be forewarned, the simplicity of this ritual betrays its price. Should your desire be answered, the being behind the veil will extract the price of the firstborn. For the firstborn to be returned into the custody of our world, the one who states their desire must forfeit their life, or the life of a loved one. An exorcism may also work, but no such research exists to back up this claim. This was it. I found exactly what I was looking for. I could find no author or credit otherwise anywhere within the book. When that thing returned to Ethans body, I would be ready. I returned to the church that evening before heading home. I found Father David sitting at a desk in a back room, sifting through various papers. I did not know him well, having only been going to his church about two weeks, and only having two face to face interactions with him. He welcomed me warmly and asked what I could do for him. I stumbled for the correct words. “Father, if you believe in god and heaven, then you must also believe in the devil, and hell, right? ” I questioned. “Of course. Lucifer tempts us everyday and it is our duty to believe in the lord to protect us. ” He explained. “And demons to then? And the rituals used to contact them? To ask favors of them? ” Father Davids smile vanished, and he stood up from his chair, eyeing me now with a look of suspicion and fear. Before he could speak, I began talking. I explained everything to him, from the incident with the candle, Zacks accident, and all the strange and terrifying incidents with Ethan. I told him of the book I found in the library, and its suggestions. During my explanation of the situation, Fathers gaze transformed from fear and disgust, to stone cold determination. Finally, I stopped talking, waiting for a response. “Tonight, ” Father David started, “We do the exorcism tonight. Everyday is another day he could hurt you or anyone else. ” I was caught off guard, but I was not about to argue with him. I watched as he grabbed a few items. A large, ancient looking bible, a large silver crucifix, and an ornately decorated glass bottle filled with water. In the back of my mind, I hoped Jackie wouldnt be mad at me. I walked in the front door first. I was going to tell Jackie what was going on before I invited Father David in. I didnt have the chance. The house was dark, save the light of the silent TV, casting long shadows throughout the room. Jackie was on the couch, her knees up to her chest, her hands hidden under her crossed arms. Her expression conveyed pure terror. She looked at me with both relief and fear. Her eyes darted around, looking for something. Where was Ethan? “Church dad, really. ” Came the voice of child. Ethan entered the living room from the kitchen. He walked into the living room, his strut signifying that this territory belonged to him. Jackie let out a pained sob. In the darkness before I had not noticed the tears running down her face. Ethan walked in front of the TV, the glow giving his facial features a sickening white look, fringed with deep shadows. He held something up before his eyes, carefully examining it. It caught the light on a strange, reflective way and I felt my stomach turn as I recognized Jackies wedding ring, still on the finger. My voice lowered to a growl. “What have you done? ” I whispered a tone more threatening than I thought myself capable of. Ethan only smiled at me and dropped the finger on the ground. I took a step back and flung the front door open. “Father its happening now! ” I yelled into the darkness outside. Ethans smile disappeared, betraying his surprise. Father David busted through the door, his crucifix now on a silver chain around his neck, bible open in one hand, holy water in the other. Before anyone could respond Father splashed the water onto Ethan, who fell to the ground and scooted away from the priest as fast as possible until he hit the wall. Again, the priest splashed him with the water, reciting words from the bible in Latin. After a minute of small splashes of water followed by Latin passages from the bible Father David looked to me, “Quickly we must restrain him, this wont work for long. ” Through strange snarling noises Ethan began to laugh, but it was quickly put to a stop when Father David splashed a large amount of holy water on him. I grabbed a nearby lasso from Ethans toy box. It may have been a childs toy, but rope was rope and this would due. I quickly restrained him while he was stunned from the constant stream of water. “Please Ethan, come back to us. ” I whispered in his ear as I tied his arms behind his back. I stood up when the job was finished. The priest used the last of his water, and then dropped the empty bottle, replacing it with the silver crucifix. Long, powerful phrases boomed from Father Davids voice. He held the crucifix inches from Ethans face, shouting holy phrases at him. The commanding tone of his voice could not be mistaken. I rushed to Jackies side. She was holding her left hand to her chest, crusted blood covered the front of her shirt. I took her hand and gently inspected the wound. She had no ring finger, only a fleshy wound of torn skin and meat. I met her eyes with mine and smiled. I would be her strength. I used the sleeve of my shirt to wrap the wound and contain the bleeding, kissing her forehead when I was finished. I looked at her a moment, enjoying the silence with just me and her. I perked up. Why was it silent. I turned quickly around to see Ethan standing over Father David, who was now on the ground, clutching his crucifix to his heart his face still wrought with determination. Blood seeped freely from his mouth. In his hand Ethan held a long, glistening mass of red and pink. I realized with horror that is was Father Davids tongue. Ethan, now panting, and covered in more sweat than holy water, bent down and picked up the ornate bottle. He smashed it against the wall shattering it, leaving a razor-sharp protrusion in his hand. “Ethan no! ” I shouted as a leapt up. It was to late. Ethan slammed the razor glass in Father Davids throat, burying it nearly six inches deep. I fell to my knees. I felt Jackie embrace me from behind. It was an embrace motivated of pure love, and hapless sorrow. She whispered to me, as we both watched Ethan slam the glass over and over again into Father Davids throat, now a mess a blood and flesh, “I read Ritualia years ago, when Ethan first started exhibiting strange behavior, ” She explained. I felt her lips kiss the side of my head as she rested on my back. “I know you saw it to, and thats why you brought the priest. I know what has to be done. ” Those words shattered any sense of hope I had left. The color left the world, and even Ethans terrible acts seemed numb before my eyes. I couldnt stop her. I couldnt will my body to move. I watched as she leaned down and picked up a piece of the shattered glass, placing it in my hand and wrapping my fingers around it. She moved in front of me and placed a palm on my cheek, looking lovingly into my eyes. She picked up my hand with the glass and brought it to her neck. “You have to be the one to do it. ” She said softly. “Please, ” she pleaded “No, ” I whispered back, “I…I cant. ” She smiled softly. “You have to, or we all die. Theres no more time. ” Ethan stopped stabbing Father David, and looked at us, noticing what was happening. “No! ” Came two voices from Ethans mouth. He started towards us, and I looked back at Jackie. She was still smiling at me. I couldnt stop the tears. They just flowed, unrestrained. I didnt understand how there could be so many tears. I laid Jackies body down, clutching her head into my chest as I listened to her final breaths leave her body. I stayed like that for hours, sobbing loudly, my entire world, crumbling around me as I held her. Eventually I couldnt cry anymore. It was as if all my emotion had left my body. Everything was numb. I looked around my living room. It was a as if a tornado had come through. The sun had come up at some point, but everything was grey. There was no color left in the world. I gently laid Jackie down and moved to examine Ethan where he had fallen. No heartbeat. The possession had proven to much for his frail body. I walked upstairs and grabbed my gun, loading a single round into the chamber. These are my final words, as I sit in my living room, surrounded by the body of my soulmate and our child, and the innocent man who tried to help. Dont play with rituals. Dont play Bloody Mary. Dont play with Ouija boards. You never know what might be real.

Revisiting the album especially in hindsight, requires a delve into an era where the metrics of success changed as the era was going. How else does an album go #1 on the Billboard 200, sell 252, 000 units in the first week within the forecasted 250k-300k sales figures, yield two Top 15 singles out of the three released but then end up reading as a pert near faux pas? REVIEW: For this section, Ill be sharing my thoughts on the three official singles [were not Interscope so we remember what the 3rd one was] two promotional singles and movie tie-in track released in the era of ARTPOP. “Give me that thing I love! ” “Applause”: the leaked…err lead single and last track to have actually made the album. Once the audio was officially released, a lyric video filmed at Mickys in West Hollywood then saw release [and features a litany of drag entertainers including Courtney Act, Shangela, Shannel, Willam, Morgan McMichaels & Landon Cider to name a few. Eventually, the Inez and Vinoodh directed music video was released to widespread acclaim and viral success. The release was marred by the fact the song was leaked which caused 2013 Twitter Gaga to tweet out her disdain with the song being leaked [and even instructing the Little Monsters on how to file claims/become copyright bots. Even if the 2nd verse ended up being about Gaga addressing critics of hers, the song stands as exceptionally crafted music, and nothing says you want a pop hit like spelling something out. The most famous performance of the song took place when she opened the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, with the number giving “evolution of my career thus far” realness [and being responsible for the speechless/WTF faces of both Jaden and Willow Smith. Overall, the song is exceptionally made and as mentioned in the 2013 Ultimate Rate, stands as my 2nd favorite Gaga song ever. FUN FACT: it was Jimmy Iovine, head of Interscope Records, that saved the song from getting canned when its reported he said after a listening session where “Applause” was played last in the session, “Every record that you played me is better than the one that you played before it, so the last one should be the first single. ” “You cant stop my voice cuz you dont own my life” “Do What U Want”: the collaborative effort between her and R. Kelly that brought forth waves of controversy from the date of release [October 21st, 2013; fun fact my 23rd birthday] to now where it was removed from streaming services following the resurfacing of R. Kellys sexual misconduct which is phrasing it nicely and already gives too much attention to him and not the victims speaking out against the disgusting shit he did. Despite having no video released aside from a TMZ leak of the Terry Richardson directed effort which…yikes and a half, the track went to peak at #15 on the Hot 100 [because if anything is consistent with 2013, people bought Beats by Dre headphones and pimping an exclusive Best Buy shade of blue ones made DWUW poppin. Aside from that, a 2nd less scuzzy version was first performed on the Season 5 finale of The Voice [the moment where the outfits ended up being coordinated with the drinks, AKA a gay intern getting several raises] and eventually released for digital download in December following the positive reception. In 2014, along with a lot of ARTPOP scraps, a solo iteration of the song leaked. In terms of moral outrage, in 2013 and in January of 2019, Gaga faced scorn for having collaborated with R. Kelly [and for having worked with Terry Richardson, who is also believed in open secret style to be a sexual predator] which culminated in the removal of the song from streaming [and the album in a sense as a re-released version of ARTPOP came to fruition without the song] after the series finale of the docuseries Surviving R. Kelly. In terms of critical reception not counting for moral outrage, the song embodies the 2013 est. description of a recording artist or song with a sordid history of controversy; the “problematic fave”. It amounts to begrudgingly enjoying a song despite one or more of the artists being unsavory [and thats putting it nicely. The song is most known as a performance staple having two major moments; one was on the episode of SNL Gaga hosted in the disco tinged outfit where she ends up straddling R. Kelly and the second being at the American Music Awards/AMAs where the JFK and Marilyn inspired number was considered a highlight in Gagas storied live performance history. Personally, Id always liked the song even with all the problematic baggage it carried on but came to respect the decision to remove it from streaming. “I dont need to be on top to know Im worth it/cause Im strong enough to know the truth. ” “G. U. Y. ”: the Zedd produced track and to date Gagas lowest charting single from a studio album [ 76 on the Hot 100 for one week. What the song lacked in U. S. radio play, it more than made up for video wise as it was the centerpiece behind the infamous ARTPOP FILM [which had the title track of the album and “Venus” preceding it before a looped version of “MANiCURE” closed out the video. If any song started the “tried to save pop music but yall let it flop” trope in stan Twitter, this is it right here. In terms of promotion, while the song fared poorly, the music video fared…better but not by much considering that the song was wrapped in a film that lasts 11 minutes. The decision ended up looking questionable so much theres a G. only edit exists. In either version, “G. ” stands as Gagas most opulent video [and this is against the Guinness World Record holder for most product placement in a music video “Telephone”] as it features cameos from Andy Cohen, the cast of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, YouTube sensation SkyDoesMinecraft, a room decorated with roses, a swimming area with Gaga lounging about, a gold and blue room centered around her and a bow, cannons firing money once she and the Housewives ransack offices; all that didnt account for the Michael Jackson, Jesus, Mahatma Gandhi and John Lennon blood drawing into clones that eventually see mass release. In closing, “G. ” was doing the absolute most and outside of the excess, the song is 2013 Zedd in fine form. As to why this wasnt a hit like other songs before, that much is still mystifying considering 2013-2014 is when the public liked Zedds production and was in the EDM boom of 2009-2015. If anything, the 11-minute video and in turn edited form of the song that was actually the single being released, probably spelled doom for “G. Y” when that should have never been the case. PROMOTIONAL SINGLES “Been hurtin low from livin HIGH FOR SO LONG” “Dope”: the #8 on the Hot 100 peaking promo single that stands as Gagas most histrionic ballad [and winner of most unsettling single art even if she couldve gone far more unsettling. Originally, the song was debuted at the iTunes Festival under the name “I Wanna Be With You” and featuring the since scrapped lyric, “Id rather be poor and happy, than rich and alone. ” If theres anything to give righteous hits or criticism of the song is that its not beginner friendly. Very few Little Monsters can withstand balladga especially on a song that tackles her tackling her addiction in what is flat out, her saddest, darkest song to date. Aside from that, if theres anyone who can make their battle with addiction so captivating, it would be her. “Lets blast off to a new dimension…in your bedroom” “Venus”: the #32 on the Hot 100 track…after it ended up being picked as the 2nd single before DWUW gained traction before the critics and took its place, relegating it to promotional single status. Once the song saw any form of release, the song ended up getting its fair share of mixed reviews but still relatively cute but tepid reception. The song ended up being used in the ARTPOP Film, after the title track and right as shes buried in the pool [look, it was a weird video and the golden rule of Lady Gaga especially in 2013 was “just go with it”. Personally, I do like “Venus” quite a bit even if releasing it as a single [official or promotional] never quite made sense to me [then again, nothing on this album read as a single but more on that later. MOVIE TIE-IN “Do you wanna see the girl who lives behind the Aura? ” “Aura”: the song that opens the album and given video treatment for Gagas role of “La Chameleeone” in the movie Machete Kills …and also was pitted against roughly 4 other songs in the “2nd single gulag” that was this era. “Aura” was originally introduced through a demo leak back when the working title and image was called “Burqa”. Where the song succeeds is the fact that it opened the album, because nothing was made to let listeners know that Gaga was firing on all her weird cylinders faster than a song featuring the other memorable lyrics, “Enigma popstar is fun, she wears burqa for fashion”. OTHER SONGS OF NOTE FROM ARTPOP Aside from the singles, promotional singles and tie-in, these are the underrated/overlooked/infamous cuts from the album that more or less deserve adulation. “Were both convicted criminals of thought” “Sexxx Dreams”: the most underrated Gaga song to her name and considering the deep bench of songs she has that could fit the bill, thats saying something. Originally pitted against “MANiCURE” in a tweet for 2nd single status and if it were up to me, they both get released with SD getting released first [if 1990 could handle “I Touch Myself” by The Divinyls, theres no questioning they couldve handled “damn you were in my SEXXX Dreams”. The song also holds a special distinction as its alleged that it was a collaboration of some kind with Rihanna. Of course that only came about in a tweet from Riri, and tweets automatically “meant” COLLABORATION “I admit that my habits expensive/and you may find it quite offensive” “Jewels ‘N Drugs”: the most polarizing track on the album and as it stands, the most polarizing track of Gagas career. Featuring Atlanta rapper, T. I., Oakland rapper Too hort and Chicago rapper Twista, J&D sees Gaga playing hook girl on her own song and the albums aggro form of electronic music and pert near garish but captivating imagery come to a head. T. I. s style of rapping opens the song, Too horts verse adding a certain skeevy sheen while Twistas verse ends up being the most indicative of the albums aggressive polymerization of electronic and pop sensibilities. The song isnt well revered much [hell, popheads listened to Prism and “XO” from S/T and decided “Jewels ‘N Drugs” was still the worst song in the 2013 Ultimate rate. Still, for those among us that can withstand batshit Gaga, J&D stands strong as uninhibited gold. “If I could be Mary Jane Holland tonight” “Mary Jane Holland”: a song that displays Gaga in steely ugliness under decadent but repugnant vices such as “Russian hookers & cheap gin”. Its unconfirmed but widely believed that this track beat out “Brooklyn Nights” for inclusion on the album. MJH doesnt get that much attention sprinkled onto it which is kind of weird considering that this is the sister track to “Dope”. Before she regrets caving into addiction, MJH plays as the dark version of escapism and its uncomfortable to get into at first. Still, theres enough about the production making sense on the album to where it belongs. “I know, I know you want me/youre just a pig inside a human body” “Swine”: the song behind the infamous and gloriously messy SXSW [South by Southwest] performance in which Gaga was vomited on repeatedly. The song underneath its trashy sheen is actually a callout of Gagas sexual assaulter [something that would be brought up again on the track “Diamond Heart” from Joanne. Originally, this was pitted against “Aura” in a tweet for 2nd single status which wouldnt make sense because even though “Swine” is amazing, a single it is not. If anything cemented this eras move to “uglier”/“unsettling” artistic directions, it was the aforementioned SXSW performance. No one saw Gaga playing the drums, getting puked on and then finishing the “pukeformance” on a mechanical pig while also trying to play the piano with her feet, coming. If anything acted as a warning for such a moment, it was Gaga screaming at the top of her lungs, “FUCK YOU POP MUSIC! THIS IS ARTPOP! ” Taking It Personal: For this section, Ill be going semi-op ed on you all by relaying my thoughts on ARTPOP and what it ended up resulting as for Lady Gaga down the road. If anything about ARTPOPs handling being proof that hindsight is 20/20, keep in mind this quote from her guest judge appearance on S9 of Drag Race; “In my career, the times when Ive been the most angry with myself, is when I watched it back & I knew what it was supposed to be; but I listened to somebody else. ” There are so many ways this applies to the ARTPOP era. The overall fuckup was the fact that a major label with arguably, the freshest pop diva to grace music, had no clear backup plan after the lead single was leaked one week ahead of schedule. Saving “Applause” from certain doom ended up being a fluke because under no circumstance should they have been allowed to be that much of a goddamn trainwreck. After the iTunes festival is when the tweets asking fans what the 2nd single should be was already pushing their luck. The artist pitting “MANiCURE” against “Sexxx Dreams” was one thing, but the fact a 2nd tweet was made, especially pitting “Aura” and “Swine” against each other, proved that no communication between artist and label, let alone backup plan was ever established [that would come to a head with the ARTPOP app, which did nothing but count down the day to release, not yielding any song which couldve been on the album anyway but also being intertwined with Gagas former manager, Troy Carter. The fact that a song, “Venus”, was picked but then relegated to promo release after “Do What U Want” caught enough attention to warrant single release [a precursor to “Million Reasons” being 2nd single in place of “A-YO”] and then being released with ANOTHER promo single in “Dope” further illustrates the messiness of the release schedule. Think about it; the single release schedule was including but not limited to: “Applause” one week early to combat the leak situation, an ill-advised or actually unsupervised DOUBLE TWEET of “this one or this one” as a 2nd single but giving one of them a lyric video because they have a bit part in a sequel, then announcing “Venus” “winning”, THEN releasing “Do What U Want” as promo and then a single, and then “Dope” and that was in the span of mid-August to early November when the album was released. Applause, MANiCURE, Sexxx Dreams, Aura, Swine, Venus, DWUW and Dope makes 8 attempts at releasing 1-2 singles in a span of roughly two months [which is before G. ended up as “3rd single” and NINTH attempt at releasing a single from the album. The lack of escape route or plan B of singles after “Applause” also ended up showing Gagas Achilles heel; her being petrified of failure as the Gaga persona. Dont let the DONT BUY APPLAUSE VIDEO STUNT fool you; from this video onward, Gaga was establishing that she was sensing failure was afoot and was going to do the absolute most, even if it meant VOLANTIS sized moments of “all press is good press” which brings about where the spectacle and brand awareness missed. Its no secret that Gaga was studious about fame or the spotlight; hell, she named her debut that and even gave a glimpse into how she studied fame in an interview with 60 Minutes The difference is, Gaga never conditioned herself to be OK with failure as Gaga once she actually made it [mind you, she was dropped from the first label she ever signed with before Interscope swooped in and saved her. In part 4 of her VEVO Certified webisodes she describes the album as an intensely creative person thats trapped in a cage, further stating, “All I wanted to do was make electronic music and wear club kid clothes. It was for me about returning to what I love about music, not necessarily what everybody loves. ” The thing of it is, nobody that consumed the album hated the music or even formed an opinion on it because they couldnt look past the messy handling of the label and the astonishingly unequipped management decisions. If anything, ambition is another “made and break” factor as to what went wrong in this era [as opposed to make or break which would indicate some restraint concept wise. Calling it “too much too soon” is also selling short just how much of Gagas creative energy went into the entire project [mind you, she made a public appearance at Mickys WeHo and even used that moment for the lyric video of the lead single. Its belabored, but if anything showed just how much she poured in was the ARTPOP film which featured the title track, “Venus”, “G. ” and a looped rendition of “MANiCURE” all in the span of 11 minutes. The best part of that, its cinematic and keeps something of a constant “struggle to stay afloat narrative. ” The worst is that its visual excess and in more blunt phrasing, bloat as it shifts color palettes roughly three times minimum; has celebrity cameos from a YouTube sensation and members of one of Bravos most successful franchises alongside their creator Andy Cohen playing God. Its opulent to those that can withstand it and off-putting to those who cant quite stomach the multitude of visual choices. Proof of that comes again in the fact that theres a “G. ” only edit of the music video. She clearly had self-interests in these visual outings but more oft than not, it resulted in failure [and thats not even revisiting VOLANTIS, the flying dress. In terms of the music, Gaga did not fail there on its own merit; mishandling of the project was the widely believed death knell of the entire era. Visually, she ended up splitting the difference between great live shows and live shows where she generated conversation anyway (because she will not go down without a headline as her “academic of fame” persona obsesses over. The arguable zenith of the entire era can be traced to the 2013 MTV VMAs where she was heralded for another stellar performance [even if her 2009 Paparazzi performance will be untouchable and in 2013, her moment of excellence was overshadowed by the internet roasting Miley Cyrus attempts at twerking on Robin Thicke. In turn, the divisive nadir comes in the SXSW performance of “Swine”. Despite the fact that having someone vomit on her made total sense for a song called “Swine” which confronts a sexual assaulter under deliciously deceptive raunchiness and filth, criticism towards her antics reached fever pitch with the performance. Cher was quoted as saying “Call me old fashioned, but I wouldnt let some chick puke on me”, a petition calling for Gaga to end her working relationship with the vomit artist Millie Brown and Demi Lovato took to Twitter to accuse Gaga of “glorifying” eating disorders [which has afflicted both Gaga and Demi. Two visual areas that didnt lead to much criticism were the Roseland Ballroom residency to mark its closing and the eventual ArtRave: the ARTPOP Ball tour. Live at Roseland Ballroom marked the last 7 shows that the venue would ever see after 58 years of operation. The main promotion used was when Gaga and co. invited the entire audience of the Late Show with David Letterman to the venue where performances of “Dope” and “G. ” were aired on the show. ArtRave: the ARTPOP Ball tour was her fourth headlining concert and saw her take on an immersive staging. The very last date of the tour in France was famously livestreamed for Yahoo! Live. The only criticisms lobbed at her [not being much different than Gagas initial criticisms from the debut] were that the visuals/public appearances or other factors outside of music were overshadowing the music one visual showcase not mentioned in full, but indicative of this criticism is the allegedly 25 million-dollar budgeted VEVO showcase/performance of ARTPOP. This is often labeling this as “the antics” getting in the way of the album, which in turn is shorthand for “Umm shes being weird, wheres Bad Romance, we want Bad Romance, not this weird shit. ” Mind you, all of this was being directed at Gaga before, during and long after [arguably to this day] the albums singles, album itself and first week sales were all in the open and indicative of their successes. Even with reasonable speculation, theres still no real way to figure out or surmise why a #1 album yielding two Top 15 singles with 252k units in the first week and 9th best-selling album that year ended up with such a bad public stock let alone ending up one of the most divisive releases of the 2010s. If theres one thing this era got right, it was capturing Gagas persona in its raw, ugly, nakedness and not just based on this image alone It showed the hyperperfectionist of pop music at her most imperfect and having to be as scrappy as her 2007 days just to get through not only the media scrutiny [which is just code for mixed at best reviews of the album] but through having to cope with failure by way of “too much ambition” or a lack of focus in the face of a fandom expecting things to always be “Bad Romance” level “big”. Again, if we keep in mind the quote from Gagas guest judge appearance on Drag Race, “In my career, the times when Ive been the most angry with myself, is when I watched it back & I knew what it was supposed to be; but I listened to somebody else. ” theres a less explored application as to why this resonates with the ARTPOP era so much; the fact that this album wasnt Gagas ideal release of the album in the first place. That in turn brings up the infamous unreleased project, ARTPOP Act II, which has a fascinating video analysis by PopHatesFlops. In its initial concept, ARTPOP was intended to be a double album; one album being “art” and giving way to experimental based production and the other being “pop” or the commercially accessible version of the project. Cut to the album being divided in two but not by confines of “art” and “pop” but using what was classified as a “Reverse Warholian” idea of “ART POP” as opposed to Andy Warhols “POP ART”. “Act I” is the album we ended up with and “Act II” was the one closely associated with the ARTPOP app where new music was intended to be released before August of 2014 [long after “G. ” had tanked in March and the last time Gaga spoke about the album to Ryan Seacrest in April] where she took to Twitter to tell a fan “i have moved on from anything having to do with previous management. New music, new manager, new promotion. Life is amazing. ” Mind you, this is before taking into account of two of the most famous unreleased songs by Gaga, “Brooklyn Nights”. which ended up leaking some time in 2014 and “PARTYNAUSEOUS” which ended up being used as an interlude on the ArtRAVE tour but was actually the second scrapped collaborative effort between her and Kendrick Lamar after “Bitch Dont Kill My Vibe” was reworked into a solo joint. In terms of other unreleased songs from this era, the three that stick out in this regard are “Tea” which even had Gaga taking to Twitter to tease the lyrics “Its been oolong/Since Ive had a sip and/I get this feeling I need a green detox/The truth will be the winner tonight. ” and the others being two collaborative efforts with Azealia Banks, “Ratchet” and “Red Flame” [the latter of which inspired the Azealia livestream rant, or more specifically, the one where she says shes going to “charge” for a snippet] both of these collaborations wouldnt see daylight due to a falling out between the two to where Gaga, backstage at her Today Show/daytime performance telling fans backstage that Azealia had a “bad attitude”. Somewhere between the initial recordings of the album to even the attempts at saving “Applause” from certain doom on the first try, its very clear Gaga and co. were not on good terms. How else does that more or less result in the songs chucked out for release, an app thats promoted with new material in mind not coming close to any fruition in that regard and a complete 180 stylistically occurs within months of each other [especially when considering her jazz collaborative effort with Tony Bennett, Cheek to Cheek, was released in September of 2014, six months after the 3rd single to stick as a single tanks on the Hot 100] All that anger was eventually used for the ARTPOP film; remember “G. ” and the music video climax of Gaga and the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills ransacking the corporate offices? Thats a not so subtle dig at Troy Carter/the previous regime behind the promotional fuckups of the era. Overall, ARTPOP is a hard album to write about even with the pieces of that puzzle having been chucked all over the place. Its not a terrible album as critics would like to make you believe. Its also Gaga being her most self-destructive persona wise. Its brought about several of her most iconic live moments and visual stylings of her career to date. Its also marred by “Do What U Want” and its original collaborator adding to the bad stock the album would get in terms of public perception. Its an album that offered a “Reverse Warholian” experience…that resulted in the seller finding solace in a constant state of reinvention that feels like course correction run amok. Thats not to dismiss the album as it stands as an aggressive and immersive release. Its an adventurous outing that splits the difference so many ways but surprisingly still has footing and potential replay value. She attained success but ended up using this era as means to say, “I can do more”/“I can do better”/“I can learn from this. ” At the risk of getting sentimental, this is the first Gaga CD I ever bought [the week it came out, so I did my part] and if anything speaks to my feelings of being weird, being bashed for it but still being the very thing thats “hated” so much, its an album where Gaga was at her weirdest, got ridiculed from here to hell, but still stands as something “hated” but revered by so many others. After the attack that kills Shinichirō, Kanako asks to see Tadayoshi's library, which contains information on the Elder Bairns. They find that the library is a fake, then Kanako confronts Saya with the living Nono, Nene and Shinichirō before forcing her to drink Elder Bairn blood. It is revealed that the town's entire population, including those close to Saya, were actors in an experiment organized by Fumito, and that Saya is actually an Elder Bairn in human form. She had sworn an oath not to kill humans and in turn hunted those of her same kind, but Fumito captured her and subjected her to an experiment. Saya was implanted with false memories of her past "human life. all with the goal of seeing whether her inner self could be altered so the oath could be broken. Whenever Saya began relapsing and remembering her past, Fumito used drugs and hypnosis to make her docile again, and all the Elder Bairns she faced were controlled by Fumito using her blood. Kanako had wanted to use Saya to prove the existence of Elder Bairns, suborning Nono, Nene and Shinichirō to help her. Fumito, Itsuki and Yūka then confront them, with Fumito unleashing an Elder Bairn that brutally kills Nono, Nene and Shinichirō for their treachery. Saya saves Kanako from the Elder Bairn while killing it, but Kanako is then killed by Tadayoshi, revealed to be a human-Elder Bairn hybrid driven berserk by an overdose of Saya's blood given by Fumito. Saya—now back to her true self—is forced to kill Tadayoshi, and witnesses Fumito release an artificial Elder Bairn which slaughters the town's population before Saya kills it. Fumito's soldiers attempt to shoot Saya, but Itsuki sacrifices himself to save her as he had grown to love her. Fumito and Yūka—who participated so as to achieve political power with Fumito's help—escape on a helicopter. When Saya tries to stop them, Fumito shoots her. Recovering on the lakeside, Saya learns from the dog that her wish was to remain herself when in Fumito's experiment, and that she must now pursue her next wish. Saya sets off in pursuit of Fumito. Characters [ edit] Saya Kisaragi ( 更衣 小夜, Kisaragi Saya) The main protagonist—she is unrelated to any previous entry in the Blood franchise aside from her first name, chosen weapon and abilities. [5] 7] Outwardly, Saya is an innocent and clumsy girl who acts as the shrine maiden at her father's shrine, going out at night to hunt Elder Bairns as part of a sworn duty. [8] In reality, she is an Elder Bairn who was abandoned and raised by humans. Due to an oath she swore, she is unable to feed on humans herself, and the experiment was designed to see if her nature could be altered. [9] Saya is voiced by Nana Mizuki in Japanese. [8] Mizuki described Saya as she is portrayed in the anime as an easy-going girl who enjoys her school life and shares a strong bond with Tadayoshi. [10] In the English dub, she is voiced by Alexis Tipton. [11] Fumito Nanahara ( 七原 文人, Nanahara Fumito) The owner of a cafe just opposite Saya's home, who acts as cook for Saya and her father, preparing Saya's school lunches. [8] Fumito is revealed to the mastermind behind the entire experiment, manipulating events in an attempt to rewrite who Saya is. [9] Fumito is voiced in Japanese by Kenji Nojima. [8] Nojima described Fumito's character as a mysterious, friendly and knowledgeable figure. [10] In the English dub, he is voiced by Robert McCollum. [11] Tadayoshi Kisaragi ( 更衣 唯芳, Kisaragi Tadayoshi) Saya's father, and the owner of the Shinto shrine where Saya acts as shrine maiden. He also supervises her role as a slayer of Elder Bairns. [8] In truth, he is a human-Elder Bairn hybrid used by Fumito to capture and manipulate Saya due to their strong similarity. [9] Tadayoshi is voiced in Japanese by Keiji Fujiwara. [8] Fujiwara described Tadayoshi as a stern character who hides the depths of his fatherly feelings for Saya. [10] In the English dub, he is voiced by Bill Jenkins. [11] Yūka Amino ( 網埜 優花, Amino Yūka) A member of Saya's class who acts as an older sister figure, chastising Saya for being late or distracted while also caring about her. [8] In reality, Yūka is an ally of Fumito who joins his experiment in exchange for political power in Tokyo. She is the only member of the "main cast" to survive. [9] Yūka was voiced in Japanese by Masumi Asano. [8] Asano described Yūka's initial character as a rough and loud person with a kind heart. [10] In the English dub, she is voiced by Martha Harms. [11] Itsuki Tomofusa ( 鞘総 逸樹, Tomofusa Itsuki) The class president for Saya's class, he is considered the class' star and has unspoken feelings for Saya that she is oblivious to. [8] He is also part of the experiment, but develops genuine feelings for Saya that lead to his death when he tries to defend her from Fumito's men. [9] It is later revealed that he was a spy sent by enemies of Fumito to observe the report on the experiment. [12] Itsuki is voiced in Japanese by Atsushi Abe. [8] Abe described Itsuki as a distinguished figure who is overly quiet about his feelings. [10] In the English dub, he is voiced by Chris Burnett. [11] Shinichirō Tokizane ( 時真 慎一郎, Tokizane Shin'ichirō) A taciturn classmate of Saya for whom she develops a crush during the course of the series. [8] While he feigns affection for Saya, he is in revealed to be a mercenary taking part in the experiment on promise of a high payment. [9] Shinichirō is voiced in Japanese by Tatsuhisa Suzuki. [8] Suzuki defined Shinichirō as a silent character with an air of importance surrounding him. [10] In the English dub, he is voiced by Scott Freeman. [11] Nene & Nono Motoe ( 求衛 ねね&のの, Motoe Nene & Nono) A pair of identical twin girls in Saya's class, who act in a mischievous way and often speak in unison. [8] In reality, they are former criminals who participated in the charade to have their records erased so they could find work. [9] The pair are voiced in Japanese by Misato Fukuen. [8] Fukuen described the duo as the anime's "mascot characters. 10] In the English dub, they are voiced by Lindsay Seidel. [11] Kanako Tsutsutori ( 筒鳥 香奈子, Tsutsutori Kanako) Saya's homeroom teacher, a woman with a casual and sometimes joking attitude, and a liking for Saya. She is also fascinated by old stories and folklore. [8] In reality, she is a scholar who agreed to participate in Fumito's scheme to learn about Saya and prove the Elder Bairns' existence. [9] Kanako is voiced in Japanese by Miho Miyagawa. [8] In the English dub she is voiced by Lydia Mackay. [11] Dog ( 犬, Inu) A character who converses with Saya over the course of the series, being the one responsible for granting her wish to remain herself. Its true identity is the familiar of Kimihiro Watanuki, a character from the manga series xxxHolic. [13] 14] The dog is voiced by Jun Fukuyama in Japanese. When he was recording his dialogue for the series, Fukuyama was surprised that the very last line of the final episode was given to a dog. [14] In the English dub, the dog is voiced by Todd Haberkorn. [11] Production [ edit] The yokai -based designs of the Cthulhu Mythos -inspired Elder Bairns were decided upon after the creation of the first episodes' Elder Bairn, modeled after a Jizo statue. [15] Blood-C was a collaborative production between Production I. G and CLAMP. Production I. G is an animation studio which had created the Blood franchise with the 2000 film Blood: The Last Vampire, which was the studio's first attempt at an original in-house project. CLAMP is an all-female manga artist group made up of writer Nanase Ohkawa and artists Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi. The main staff included both newcomers and people who had worked on previous entries in the Blood franchise. These included concept creator and co-writer Junichi Fujisaku, one of the original creators of the Blood franchise; and director Tsutomu Mizushima, whose most notable recent work was the anime adaptation of CLAMP's manga xxxHolic. Background artwork was created by Hiromasa Ogura, and setting artwork was created by Kazuo Kanpei of Kusanagi. 3D CGI was handled by Tsukamoto Mori. [5] 6] The music was composed by Naoki Satō, whose previous work included Sword of the Stranger. [5] The opening theme "Spiral" was performed by Dustz, who worked hard to make the song a suitable addition to the Blood canon and incorporated both Japanese and French lyrics. The ending theme. Junketsu Paradox. was sung by Nana Mizuki —the voice actress for Saya—who used the anime's story as inspiration and incorporated archaic phrases for the lyrics. [16] The production team was dubbed "Project BLOOD-C TV. 6] When developing plans for Blood-C, it was decided to shift its setting based on positive feedback from the change of setting between Blood: The Last Vampire and the franchise's first anime series Blood. The only elements to be retained were the first name of the main character, having a katana as her weapon, and the basic premise of her defeating monsters with that sword. [7] The wish for the project to be distinct from earlier entries was what spurred the collaboration with CLAMP, which became a large part of the anime's marketing campaign. [17] Fujisaku, when asked in an interview to describe his one creative ambition for the series, said that it was to fully expand and build upon the basic concept established in Blood: The Last Vampire. [18] The choice of a school setting, the first of its kind to be featured in the Blood franchise, was chosen because Mizushima wanted to portray a school life for Saya. [19] When asked, Mizushima did not find the change from his previous comedy anime-based turnout a barrier to his work, but did feel pressure when handling a project within the Blood franchise. [17] The scripts were written by Ohkawa and Fujisaku. [5] While Ohkawa took charge of each episode's dialogue, Fujisaku handled fight sequences. Fujisaku pointedly avoided contributing too much to the dialogue as Ohkawa's writing had a very distinctive style, his alterations made only due to story inconsistencies. [18] The series was composed in a way that gradually revealed the central mystery while pitting Saya against progressively stronger foes. [7] The setting's intensely "normal" appearance was designed to make viewers feel uneasy as faults begin appearing in Saya's everyday life. [19] According to Ohkawa, the main theme of the series was examination of the hero's role as a lonely protector of the innocent. Alongside this was the portrayal of Saya's seemingly normal life and now her role as the town's protector began intruding upon this everyday life. The final episodes were intended to evoke viewer sympathy for Saya due to the terrible ordeal she had been subjected to. The series broke from conventions of a hero-focused anime by portraying the relationships between Saya and those close to her in a very shallow way during the opening episodes. For the final few episodes, when the truth is revealed about Saya and her school life, the supporting cast were generally portrayed as "hateful" people that the viewers would wish to see die. So as to keep the series' twist ending a secret, the entire voice cast including Mizuki and Nojima—the respective voice actors of Saya and Fumito—were told nothing about the final episode's events. [15] A different interview revealed that each cast member were only given the scripts for three episodes at any one time to preserve secrecy. [10] The subtitle of each episode was drawn from the Japanese poetry anthology Ogura Hyakunin Isshu. [15] The series made regular use of bloody violence, which was exaggerated to distance viewers from the show's horrific elements. Despite this, the director said the show was not deliberately focused on bloody violence. [20] The design of the main cast was handled by CLAMP. [5] According to Mizushima, the team wanted to portray Saya in a far more human way than her previous incarnations, ending up creating a character more human then even the true human characters. [17] Saya's character as a long-haired, song-singing meganekko (girl in glasses) almost entirely created by CLAMP. Due to the stark differences between this version of Saya and previous versions, Fujisaku did not used her original surname "Otonashi" so viewers could clearly distinguish Saya's portrayal from previous entries. [18] When deciding upon her strength, Mizushima decided to use Hit-Girl from the movie Kick-Ass as a role model, making Saya stronger than Hit-Girl while also putting her into a high school environment. [21] The animation character designer was Kazuchika Kise, who worked on Blood: The Last Vampire. [5] Yasuomi Umetsu directed and worked on the storyboard for the game's opening along with Kise. A key part of the opening was a layer of blood peeling away from Saya's naked form. While compared by many to the opening of Ghost in the Shell, Umetsu said that it represented Saya's personal evolution during the course of the show. [22] The Elder Bairns were designed by Tomohiro Shinoda. [6] They were initially conceived by Ohkawa as Japanese versions of the Great Old Ones, figures from the Cthulhu Mythos created by H. Lovecraft, but this was changed. While some elements remained from the initial concept, the final Elder Bairns' physical forms as faced by Saya were inspired by yokai from Japanese folklore at Mizushima's insistence—this design choice was decided upon after storyboarding finished for the fight against the first episode's Elder Bairn, which was modeled after a Jizo statue. This initial concept was expanded upon by Mizushima, Ohkawa and Fujisaku. [15] The disguised form of the Elder Bairn from the fifth episode was based on train carriages from the Kamikōchi Line in Nagano Prefecture that Mizushima had enjoyed traveling on as a boy. [23] The Elder Bairn from the ninth episode was intended for the second episode, but the staff felt it was too strong to appear so early, so it was shifted to a later episode. All the Elder Bairns were designed to give the impression of a "vivid, flesh-and-blood texture. 15] Broadcast [ edit] Blood-C was first announced in March 2011, with its core staff and its approximate air date in July. [24] The series began broadcasting on July 7, 2011. [25] While scheduled for June 7, its late night slot meant that the first episode's actual broadcast was on July 8. [25] 26] In celebration of the anime's release, an autographed copy of the first episode's script was offered in a competition through the anime's official website. [27] A special web radio series featuring actors from the show also began broadcast in July alongside the series. [28] Dubbed " Blood-R. it ran for eleven episodes. [29] It first began broadcasting on Mainichi Broadcasting System (MBS) on July 7 and Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) on July 8. [30] Several episodes were repeated during the original broadcast in a three-day successive broadcast in August. [31] Its twelve-episode run ended on September 30, 2011. [26] 32] 33] 34] During the original broadcast, scenes were Saya's friends or other humans characters were killed by the Elder Bairns—the process of which invariably involved extensive blood and gore—were censored with areas of light and darkness. The deaths of Elder Bairns and mild erotic elements during a bathing scene with Saya were left uncensored. [15] 35] During its original run, it was broadcast simultaneously in North America, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa through the Western branch of Niconico. [39] Blood-C would later debut on WOWOW in 2013: Episodes 1 to 10 were broadcast back to back on September 22, while the final two episodes broadcast on September 29. [40] In 2015, Niconico's Japanese channel ran a marathon broadcast of all twelve episodes starting from June 28. [41] Blood-C was one of three anime cited—alongside Highschool of the Dead and Terror in Resonance —in a warning given by the Chinese Ministry of Culture to video streaming sites due to the series high violence. [42] Blood-C was later put on a blacklist by the Ministry of Culture alongside 37 other anime and manga series, prohibiting its physical and online distribution in mainland China. [43] Home media [ edit] The series' Blu-ray and DVD releases were handled in Japan by Aniplex. [44] The series released in six volumes between September 28, 2011 and February 22, 2012. [45] The series' English dub and North American licensing was handled by Funimation. [11] A box set containing the whole series released for Blu-ray and DVD on January 22, 2013. [49] edit] Films and stage play [ edit] A theatrical movie was announced shortly after the anime series, acting as a conclusion to the story of Blood-C. [50] Titled Blood-C: The Last Dark, it released in Japanese theaters on June 2, 2012. [51] 52] A live-action prequel film titled Asura Girl: Blood-C Another Story, was announced in January 2017. The movie was directed by Shutaro Oku and written by Fujisaku. Kentarō Nakao is the music composer, while Seiichi Horiguchi and Sennosuke Okumura act as producers. [53] 54] It premiered in select theaters in August 26 of that year. [54] The movie is set on a village near Tokyo in a Pre-World War II era, where bloody conflict between the villagers and Japans Special Higher Police forces erupts. The film focuses on Ran, who was introduced in The Last Mind stage play. A second live-action movie, Blood-Club Dolls 1 is set for release in late 2018. Oku returned as a director and co-wrote the screenplay with Fujisaku. Kōsuke Nishimoto is the music composer, and Horiguchi and Okumura both returns as producers. [55] A third live-action movie and a sequel, Blood-Club Dolls 2 was announced for summer of 2020 release, along with the returning staff and casts. [56] The two films focuses on Soēn, Fumitos henchman that was also introduced in The Last Mind stage play, and takes place before the events of The Last Dark film. A stage play titled Blood-C: The Last Mind was produced by Nega Design Works, being staged at the Setagaya Public Theater between July 2 to July 5, 2015. The stage play was directed by Shutaro Oku, who also created stage plays based on Persona series, and written by Junichi Fujisaku, who co-wrote the scripts for 12-episode TV anime and the feature film. Set between the events of Blood-C and The Last Dark, it expands upon Fumito's backstory. [57] 58] 59] Several actors from the play reprised their perspective roles for the live-action movies, mainly Kanon Miyahara as Saya Kisaragi, and Keisuke Minami as Fumito Nanahara. [54] 55] Print [ edit] A novelization of the series was written by Fujisaku, released on October 4, 2011 by Kadokawa Shoten. [4] A manga adaptation of Blood-C was announced alongside the anime. Adapted by manga writer and illustrator Ranmaru Kotone, it debuted in the June issue of Monthly Shōnen Ace on May 26. [24] The manga ended in August 2012, having run for over a year. [60] The manga was released in four volumes between July 26, 2011 and November 21, 2012 by Kadokawa Shoten. The manga covered the events of the whole story of Blood-C, from the anime series to the feature film. [61] 62] 63] 64] The manga was licensed for the West by Dark Horse Comics. [66] 67] 68] 69] A second spin-off manga series titled Blood-C: Demonic Moonlight began serialization in the debut issue of Newtype Ace in September 2011. It was written by Ryo Haduki and supervised by Fujisaku. [70] 71] Set in post-war Japan in 1946, the story of Demonic Moonlight acts as a prequel to Blood-C. The manga focuses on David, who works along side with a mysterious swordsman named Kagekiri on a case of mysterious Elder Bairns killing humans, and Sayas origin. The manga ended in May 2012. [71] It was released in two volumes on December 17, 2011 and May 23, 2012. [72] 73] As with the series' manga adaptation, Dark Horse Comics licensed the manga for Western publication. [71] The two volumes released on May 18 and August 3, 2016. [74] 75] Reception [ edit] During its opening week, the first DVD/Blu-ray volume failed to reach a high position in the charts against many anime and live-action releases, selling only 727 copies according to Oricon. [76] In contrast, at its release in the United Kingdom, the Complete Series release reached #4 in the anime charts. [77] At the Reaper Award awards show, Blood-C was awarded the 2013 for "Best Animation. 78] Richard Eisenbeis of Kotaku praised the character and Elder Bairn designs, and also enjoyed the questions the anime posed about where Blood-C fit in both the overall Blood franchise and the works of CLAMP. He was more mixed about the odd juxtaposition of innocent school life with the high violence of Elder Bairn encounters. He was also unsure about the ending, saying it tidied up the series' mysteries but required watching the movie to understand the story. He ended his review by calling Blood-C "a beautifully drawn show with excellent action and a legitimately compelling mystery. 79] Bradley Meek, writing for THEM Anime, gave the series 3/5 stars. He praised the way the series maintained its horror-based atmosphere in between the action sequences. He greatly enjoyed the horror and action aspects, but felt that the character-driven segments in early episodes threatened to drag down the whole experience due to mundane content and poor characters. Talking about the anime's second half, he said that it drastically altered the pace and content to the point that viewers might be put off with its conscious bending of the rules of handling characters and viewers alike—Meek was ultimately angry at the series' brutal ending, but it also left him eager to see its movie conclusion. [3] Anime News Network 's Carlo Santos gave the subtitled version a score of "B- and the dubbed version as score of "C. He found the darker elements hidden so well in early episodes that it made the series boring to watch, and that the ending would divide opinion due to its drastic alteration of how events in the series played out and its discussion of both horror tropes and the standard elements of the Blood franchise. The action scenes came in for regular praise for their choreography and many monster designs, but the school life segments were seen as boring and overly slender character designs. Santos unreservedly praised the music's quality and recurring melodies despite calling the opening and ending themes "typical angst-ridden rock numbers. He called the English dub "understated (but not emotionless. finding that it reinforced the overall atmosphere and only suffered due to the original writing. It started with a trickle. Just a gentle stream of blood that fell from my left nostril. I was walking past HR when Julie made a quick hand gesture to tell me about the situation and then ducked into the mens room. Ive had random nose bleeds since I was about twelve or thirteen, nothing too serious. More of an annoyance really. My doctors always guessed it was probably an allergic reaction that just wasnt easily identifiable so I simply learned to live with it. One of those strange quirks that made me who I am. That wasnt the case today. When I caught a glance at my face in the mirror I realized this was more than anything I normally faced. It was literally gushing out of my left nostril, oozing onto my lip and chin and I immediately freaked out wondering why I hadnt noticed it before. I grabbed a gob of paper towels and started to wipe away the blood, noticing that I also had stained my white collar shirt. Frantically I tried to keep it from going any further down my clothes and pushed it into my nose, attempting to clot the bleeding. “You get into a fight Bill? ” a coworker asked as he unzipped his pants and took a whizz. “Ha. You should see the other guy, ” I joked turning to him. “Jesus; what is that coming out your nose? ” he asked in shock as he encouraged me to glance at the mirror again. I did, startled to find that now blood was slowly dripping from my other nostril at an alarming rate. “Well crap, ” I exclaimed grabbing some more paper towels and trying to stop it from getting anywhere. “You gonna go back on the floor like that? You look like you just stepped out of a backalley, ” the man said as he washed his hands. “Nah. Ill probably need to get this checked out, ” I admitted as I hurried to go tell Susan my staff manager of the issue. “Sure just head over to the company clinic, Ill clock you out, ” she said, a bit grossed out by the mess on my face. I sighed and walked away, trying to ignore the bizarre stares I got as I stepped on the elevator. As I stood there and waited for it to shimmy to the bottom floor, I started to feel light headed and wondered how much blood I had actually lost. I dabbed at the paper towel in my left nostril to check and see if it had stopped, only to be shocked to see a long string of strange black mucus was stretching from my nose to the paper towel. What the fuck kind of infection was this? Looking at the strange dark liquid made me start to feel dizzy and I grabbed at the side bar on the elevator. The room started to spin and I collapsed to the ground. Suddenly everything was starting to spin. I heard a clamor of voices from around me, my coworkers concerned that something was wrong. “ Call the doc now! ” someone shouted. As I faded in and out of consciousness I saw more of the bizarre slime begin to spread on the floor and I felt the front of my face begin to seize with pain. “Come on Bill, lets get you to the clinic, ” a woman said offering help as I fumbled to stand. “Who are you? What department do you work for? ” I asked as I tried to find her name badge, everything was becoming so blurry. “I just want to help, ” she insisted and grabbed my wrist firmly. Something inside my body started to jerk away and then a long oozing smear of the black slime came out of my pores and latched onto her. “What the fuck? ” She screamed. I watched in stunned silence as the lifeform that seemed to be inside my body began to consume her as the elevator doors closed again. It was like watching one of those old movies where they displayed a disintegration ray, her eyes rotting out and her skin becoming brittle and frail. Before I could stop it from spreading, she became a pillar of dust and collapsed, the weird alien mucus soaking up every last bit of her and then sliding back under my skin. I fell to the floor and started breathing heavily, realizing what had just happened. I somehow found my footing again and got to my car; my nose constantly leaving a trail of black blood in my wake. I was just about to turn on the key when I felt something else begin to stretch on my face and I adjusted my rear view mirror. I watched in horror as the creature began to push apart my nose and I screamed in agony as it made its way out in between my eyes, blood and sinew bursting apart as it climbed out to feast. I began to honk my horn and scream louder as I saw security stroll by. The creature shrieked wildly as I felt the bone fragments break and shatter and I saw it rush toward the guard, the older man barely getting a chance to open fire. I fell unconscious as I saw it rush off after feasting on his corpse. When I woke, the EMT said the worst I had was the broken nose and some tissue damage. It would take a few weeks to heal. I didnt even know how to explain the strange alien infection that had lived inside me, so I kept it myself and made it home. I thought that was the end of it. Yep, you can do that too. So can your enemies- and believe me, they will. Base the game on Mel Gibson's Braveheart and give the players the option to kick some serious English tail. Sound like a winner? It sure there's a catch. Throw in a host of unimplemented features that are, for some reason, documented in the manual. Add several bugs and you've got a recipe for frustration. More so because the game seems like it ought to be so good. Braveheart challenges the player to unite the clans of Scotland and carry the war home to the English. You must master tribal politics and clan warfare. But before you can even begin to get familiar with the intricacies of 13th century kingdom management, you'll have to battle your way through an unreliable interface that seems like it should work but just doesn't. There's no doubt that the flavor of the game is perfect. The developers, Red Lemon, are from Scotland and the game is "officially" sanctioned by the Clan Association of Scotland. You can run into Wallace, Bruce, King Edward and other characters from the story. The realism is there, but the gameplay isn't. The sixteen clans in the game are each unique and modeled with an eye to historical accuracy. Over time, you'll begin to know the weakness and strengths of each of your opponents and allies. Clan Cameron for instance is great on the battlefield but are totally inefficient in times of peace. Campbell, on the other hand, prefers to rely on intrigue and their close ties with the English to rise to power. The clan you pick makes a huge difference in terms of starting location too. Once you've made your decision, you're dropped into a tiny Scottish settlement circa 1296. For those of you who prefer to get things moving a little quicker, there are a few accelerated start options to help you get the jump on the competition. The 3D tactical portion of the game is a whole lot more fun than the strategic town management portion. And the best part of the combat side of the game is the variety of camera angles. Although they're a little limiting at first, once you get to know how to use them, you'll be able to zip around the battle with relative ease. There's a soldier's view cam that allows you to look through the eyes of any of your troops. This is great for increasing involvement in the game but does very little to help you tactically. Worst of all, you can't actually take control of the soldier directly. In all the pre-release info of the game I kept thinking how cool it would be to actually be one of those soldiers and start busting heads personally. The other camera views are chase type modes that put you directly behind the soldier selected. Last of all is a free floating camera. Sadly, it's tied to the elevation of the last soldier camera and there are no separate controls for height. Otherwise camera control is pretty straightforward and surprisingly versatile. In terms of appearance, the graphics are pretty good. That is, if you play the game only a few times. I can accept that all the soldiers in an individual unit look the same. It helps to differentiate them from other units. But none of the cool armors that you spent all that time building and distributing are even apparent on the battlefield. That's less important for your own troops but it really matters whether the enemy cavalry are dressed in padded tunics or chainmail. And there's no way to tell. There's also an upper limit of 150 soldiers on the battlefield at once, so one soldier in the 3D display may represent 3 or 4 actual soldiers. I really wanted to see those big battles, but the game even jerks a little in the mid-sized battles. Things aren't much better when it comes to terrain. The pre-release hype mentioned that every mile of Scotland and northern England had been accurately mapped out when in fact, it's very hard to tell one clan territory from another from the 3D view. As a result, there are very few chances to use terrain to your advantage. Most of the fights take place out in a wide-open space- even when you're sacking a town. There are some stunning variations when it comes to weather and time of day. The snow and storm textures in particular are amazing. But the fights themselves are very shallow. Despite the inclusion of controls for formation, most combats degenerate into one massive clump of friendly and enemy units killing each other. There's no finesse here and even if you try some sophisticated maneuvering, the computer player will invariably mush all his troops together and come at you. While this may be historically accurate, it's boring as hell after your first dozen battles. I feel that the combat system has so much potential but it's impossible to actually try anything fancy here. There are so many genuinely impressive options for controlling your army but in the end, formation and tactics are just incidental to the outcome of the fight. Equally bad is the fact that you can't set the opening formation for your troops. The computer just plunks them down in lines. Why the hell are my longspear carriers in the back! What's the point? There are a lot of troops in the game and that's where your decisions really pay off. Knowing which weapons work best against other weapons is the key to winning battles. Keep in mind though that you'll be facing two opponents- Scots and English. Each group has unique weapons. Scots have exclusive use of the claymore, long spear (good against cavalry) broad axes, short bows and clubs. They're not so much about using the cavalry themselves. Most Scottish horses eventually wind up on the dinner table. The English have the big advantage here. They also get great swords, pikes, longbows and crossbows. While there's a lot of variety to the menu, it takes forever for your armorers to "discover" new weapon types. You'll be clubbing it up for a while, my friend. Soldiers aren't the only guys you can move around the map though. Your Leaders are very important. Without a leader, an army can only do three things- move, garrison and guard. To initiate attacks, raids or ambushes you'll need to assign a leader to your forces. As an added bonus, most leaders are real head bashers and can take on their share of enemy forces. Leaders are also responsible for training your troops. Gotta show them villagers how to swing a club, you know. The training of your armies is not handled very well. You recruit green troops from your surplus population. As they practice, they get better. But if you change their weapons or reassign them, they lose all if, and I stress this, you changed their weapons accidentally. Or even worse, you accidentally disband the whole freakin' unit. I was begging for one of those annoying "Are you sure. prompts. Leaders are also responsible for your diplomatic relations with other clans. You can send leaders on these missions, but they're too entirely too scarce. You're better off sending a Messenger. Messengers don't have access to all the diplomatic functions that leaders do, but they get quite a few more. Messengers can initiate alliances, ask for loans and ransom captured leaders. Why other leaders can't do it, I'll never know. The down side is that your messengers can be killed. So can your leaders now that I think about it, but you can send an army with a leader; you can't with a messenger. Still, it's worth it. The English will slaughter you if you don't form alliances. Problem is, most of the enemy clans are so aggressive that forging a reliable alliance is next to impossible. Scouts and spies are also at your disposal. Scouts map out uncharted territories. Spies infiltrate towns and allow you to enter a 3D rendering of the enemy town. Generally spies are seen as pretty dishonorable folk. Likewise the players who use them. The entire town management interface is great on a level of general concept, but the implementation of these ideas falls short of the initial promise. First off, management is a complicated affair and you feel like the game is fighting you every step of the way. There were several features that I was never able to use. Once I did puzzle out the controls, I often found the results to be disappointing. Part of the problem is that there are so many icons and they're not laid out in the most logical manner. Hardest of the 9 production areas is the town workers screen. There are nine areas in which your workers Four of these areas are based on pulling resources from the surrounding land. Farmers farm, miners mine, quarriers quarry and foresters forest. Wait, that's not right, is it? The other five types of worker take the raw materials produced by the first four and make other commodities. You have builders, bakers, armorers, tailors and jewelers. It's the allocation of workers that caused me the most frustration. First of all, you have an idle workers pool. When you add workers to a project, you'd think that they'd come from this pool. Not from other projects, right? The manual agrees with you. But in the game world things function differently. Workers are pulled from all projects proportionally. This can really cheese you off if you've spent 15 minutes balancing out all your projects. Fortunately you can lock each area so that the number of workers remain constant. A handy auto-management feature is included within the campaign. You can even set individual towns to use their own judgment while you take personal control of the production in the towns that are a little more important. The auto-management interface is a triangle. Each side of the triangle represents one aspect of production- military, trade and people. By dragging a small dot from one area of the triangle to another, you change the priorities of the town. Even on auto-manage, you can make small changes to a town's production. The big limiting factor here is that towns won't help each other in auto-manage mode. If one town is short on grain or meat, nearby towns will let 'em starve. And it's not the smartest program either. In one of my towns, 400 of the 500 workers were placed on idle status for no good reason at all. Since there's no autoroutes for trade caravans, you'd do good to let the AI handle this aspect of town management for you as well. I feel bad after playing this game. I really, really wanted to like it. It has all the elements of a great, life-consuming game. There's the open-ended structure, lots of room for management, lots of room for fighting but ultimately the game just doesn't work right. Eidos has already released a huge patch for the game and I'm still having problems. Forget about the lack of an intuitive, easy to understand interface. The game obviously has some serious technical shortcomings that aren't going to be solved immediately. Better to have held off release until the game had been tested a little more. I might even forgive a premature release if it was Wild Wild West or some other more recent property. At least then you can rationalize it based on cross marketing. But the movie here is 5 years old. Another six months wouldn't make that much of a difference. The performance of the actor who played Edward the Longshanks is absolutely wonderful. The guy has the most bone-chilling look in the movie. Robert the Bruce is one of the best character in the film. His face makes you think that he is innocent but in reality he is a coward, he is a sell out, he sets Wallace up. He is guilty of the execution of Wallace. I think that it wasn't so good that they changed some elements of the true events. In reality, Robert never betrayed Wallace. I was really disappointed by this side of the film. Why change the details of the story when it's already written. They changed the plot in order to make the movie more dramatic.

I took my 7 year old son to see this film and we had a great time. He was laughing out loud at the animals and their antics. There is a scary soldier that was pursuing Mary and Joseph, but not too scary. If you are interested in the traditional Christmas story for your is just the ticket. Great animation. Funny characters. Warning, spoiler alert: it is NOT a nice holiday movie. 95% of it was about Mary and Joseph being hunted by the king's henchman, accompanied by his vicious dogs, while the donkey tries to find/save them. Let me say that just because the dogs try to be "good" at the very end, after the henchman falls off a cliff, doesn't make it a happy ending.
